Advising Clients in Charitable Planning Options (from 2016 Advanced Estate Planning Survey Course, May 2016) | Daniel K. Hicks, Ingersoll & Hicks PLLC, Winston‐Salem

There are many different options available to clients with charitable planning goals.

Charitable lead and remainder trusts, gift annuities and life estate arrangements can be used during life or in testamentary form, but planners should be aware of the complex rules applicable to these types of arrangements.

Additionally, clients often are interested in establishing a private foundation or planning with a donor advised fund, but are unaware of the reporting burdens and the costs of establishing and maintaining foundations or the rules governing donor advised funds.

This section reviews the applicable rules and provides information that can be used in communicating with clients to assist them in making decisions regarding the best way to incorporate their charitable goals in their family estate plan.
