Original Program: Making Family Law Great Again: 2018 Essentials of Family Law, November 1-2, 2018

Available format

The concept of contempt, particularly as applied to domestic relations law, is one that has often provoked confusion among North Carolina lawyers and legal practitioners.

Much of the confusion is caused by an inadequate understanding of the crucial distinction between criminal contempt and civil contempt. But it is also critical to understand how and when a court—at either the trial or appellate level—can enforce a decree through contempt proceedings.

  • Fundamentals of the law of contempt – the statutory framework
  • Civil contempt versus criminal contempt
  • Contempt in domestic relations cases – special distinctions
  • Contempt versus execution – choosing the most effective remedy
