This session provides an overview of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), including its status under US Law; its original negotiation and implementation; its basic structure and economic effects; and its current renegotiation.

This session explains how US trade agreements like NAFTA operate under the US Constitution and US law.It also provides a basic understanding of NAFTA’s original negotiation, implementation and structure.

The session also examines NAFTA’s impact on the United States’ economy, contrary to popular myths about its benefits and costs. It summarizes the ongoing NAFTA renegotiations begun by the Trump administration in 2017, including contentious issues that could derail a final deal.

The session concludes on the future of NAFTA, including potential withdrawal by the United States, termination of the agreement, changes to tariffs should this occur, and implementation of a new agreement.
